Memorial On Spring Street Marks Spot Of Fatal Hit and Run Accident

Flowers and the American flag mark the spot on Spring Street in Monroe where William Scarborough was fatally injured in a hit and run on July 12.

A memorial alongside Spring Street marks the spot where 76-year-old William Scarborough was fatally injured in a hit and run on July 12, 2013. The Monroe resident was walking home from a game of Bingo after 10 p.m. when the accident happened. Scarborough was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Hospital, but died six days later as a result of his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle involved, identified by a Georgia State Patrol spokesperson as A.J. McGinnis, 17, from Monroe, later turned himself in to police. According to GSP, the investigation is still ongoing and charges will be considered once the investigation has been completed.

In the meantime, Scarborough's wife has been left to raise her grandchildren on her own. A fund has been set up through Athens First Bank and Trust in Monroe to help the family. If anyone wants to offer help in any way outside of financial donations, Kadee Holt of the Athens Council on Aging said they can give Paige Powell a call at 706-549-4850 or email her at ppowell@accaging.org.
