World's Oldest Woman Dies at 116

The World's Oldest Woman, Besse Cooper of Monroe, died Tuesday at the age of 116.

MONROE, Ga. -- The family of the world's oldest woman, Besse Cooper of Monroe, confirmed that she died Tuesday. Cooper turned 116 on Aug. 26, 2012. A bridge on New Hope Church Road in the community of Between was dedicated to her in the summer. Cooper moved to the community in 1917 at the end of World War I. She taught at a little two-room school just up the road from the bridge that now bears her name. Cooper was reported to attribute her longevity to “minding her own business and not eating junk food,” although she also reportedly quipped to her grandson that she thought she should be given a box of chocolates when she first learned she had become the world’s oldest living person. According to Wikipedia, Dina Manfredini, born April 4, …

However, when Valentin died on June 21, 2011, Cooper became the world’s oldest person and she has held that title ever since. Do you really believe that? Just because someone claims they are 120+ does not make it true... Besse Cooper has proven her age! There are lots of people who SAY they are older, but should you believe them when their records were "lost"? Most of those people live in a place where no such records were kept or the record keeping was questionable... Incredible claims require incredible proof.   more ›

Between Bridge to be Named for World's Oldest Person

When Monroe's Besse Cooper turns 116 on Aug. 26, there is likely to be a bridge in Between that bears her name.

Monroe is home to the world's oldest living person on record - Besse Cooper. On her next birthday, Cooper will be 116 years old. When she celebrates that major milestone in her life, and in history, Cooper will likely be doing so knowing that the New Hope Road Bridge over the Alcovy River will bear her name. Cooper moved to Between in 1917, at the age of 19, to teach. She never left and now, at the age of 115, lives in a nursing home in Monroe. An effort to have a road or bridge in the local area named after her has resulted in the new bridge over the Alcovy River in Between slated to be named the Besse Cooper Bridge. The Walton County Board of Commissioners voted last week to approve the naming of the bridge after Cooper in honor of her …
