The Minor League Baseball team will host a 5K race and “Tripp Halstead Night” next month.
The Gwinnett Braves have announced plans to raise money for a Barrow County toddler critically injured in October when a tree limb weighing several hundred pounds fell and struck him in the head. The minor league baseball team will host a 5K Race, “Tripp’s Trot,” and “Tripp Halstead Night” at Coolray Field on Saturday, June 22, when the G-Braves play the Syracuse Chiefs. "Tripp's Trot" will start at 8 a.m. and registration for the 5K can be completed online at trippstrot.com. The fee is $25 before May 22, $28 before June 1, $30 before June 20 and $35 the day of the event. Local high schools are more than three months away from beginning their defenses of state football championships. But that doesn't mean there isn't some planning already going on. Spring football practices are well under way, after all. The Georgia High School Association posted the 2013 football schedules earlier this week. Sports stars formerly from Boston, including Matt Ryan, Jason Varitek, Rodney Harrison and Dee Brown will be at Coolray Field on May 7th. Part of ticket sales from the night will go to OneFundBoston.org.
The Gwinnett Braves will show their support for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing with a special night to raise funds for the families affected. On May 7th, the G-Braves will play the Boston Red Sox's minor league team the Pawtucket Red Sox. First pitch is at 6:05pm at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. The first pitches will be thrown out by athletes who played in Boston at one time or another. On Saturday, April 13, 2013, the Walton County 4-H BB team competed at the State 4-H Match at Rock Eagle 4-H center. Walton County, whose Head Coach is William Carlan, was able to qualify and send all four of its teams to the state match. The 4-H State BB Match this year consisted of 79 teams and 564 individual shooters. In order to participate in the state match, all competitors and teams had to qualify through participating in their district match, and place a preset score benchmark in order to be eligible to compete at Rock Eagle. Reports and pictures from the reported explosions at the Boston Marathon today are coming in via Twitter and Facebook. In the local area, former Gwinnett County District 3 Commissioner Mike Beaudreau is reported to be safe. He was in Boston competing in the Boston Marathon. Friends reported on Facebook that he has sent a text to his wife notifying her that he had already completed the race and was safe. The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament comes to an end Monday in Atlanta's Georgia Dome with either Louisville or Michigan taking home the title.
When the dust settled after Saturday's final four play, it was the Louisville Cardinals and Michigan Wolverines that were left standing. USA Today gives details of Michigan's 61 - 56 win over Syracuse in the Georgia Dome Saturday. Louisville came out the victor with a 72-68 win in its game against Wichita State.
