Friday Night Lights: October 5, 2012 Local GHSA Football Schedule

MAHS takes a mid-season bye, GWA will face struggling opponent, Social Circle hope to collect first win in two years against equally frustrated team tonight.

The George Walton Academy Bulldogs travel to Hebron Christian Academy tonight. The Dogs knocked 8-A rivals the Commerce Tigers out of the regional top ten last week, beating them 26-14 to the delight of the homecoming crowd. The Bulldogs are now 5-1 and moved up a notch to #7 in GHSA's 8-A region. Hebron's season has been all shutouts, but they have primarily been on the wrong side of them. They defeated Crosskeys Academy 60-0 in their season opener but haven't scored a single point since. Last week the lost to Pincrest, 35-zip. The Dogs will take a bye next week before heading to Pincrest to try and help that team start a scoreless streak of their own.

All Purple Hurricane warnings for tonight have been cancelled, as Monroe Area is on a bye week. Last week, The 'Canes defeated Lanier in front of it's home crowd, 33-22 to remain undefeated at 5-0. They also moved up a spot to #7 in GHSA's 8-AAAAA league. The winds are forecast to pick up again by next Friday, when the Stephens County Indians beat a warpath into town.

Somebody's got to win the game in Greensboro tonight, and it might as well be the Social Circle Redskins. When the 'Skins face the equally hapless Greene County Tigers tonight, both teams will be seeking their first win of the season. Each team is off to an uninspiring 0-4 start, and Social Circle hasn't won a game since the 2010 season. Social Circle lost 23-49 to Rabin County last week; for Greene it was 26-62 against Jefferson. Next week, the Redskins head home to face Oglethorpe County, hopefully with a win under their headdresses.

One of the teams will head to the locker room nursing their first loss of the season, in a Class A matchup that is sure to a classic. The #2 Prince Avenue Christian Academy Wolverines will host the #8 Athens Academy Spartans tonight. Last week, the then-unranked Spartans defeated Lakeview 21-6 for their 4th straight win of the season to earn a spot in the AP Press Poll's top ten for the Region's Class A GHSA division. The Wolverines meanwhile, maintain a 5-0 season following last week's 40-0 blowout over Athens Christian Academy. The Wolverines have thus far outscored each opponent by an average of 23 points per game. Next week, the Spartans visit Pinecrest Academy while PACA faces the Commerce Tigers in regional action.

Clarke Central's Gladiators head into homecoming with an even record of 2-2 to face the 2-3 Salem Seminoles. Following a slow start this season, CCHS has shown promise by winning their past two games, having bested the Apalachee Wildcats 35-12 last Thursday and crushing Loganville 40-6 the week prior.  The Seminoles were defeated 18-35 by the rising Falcons of Flowery Branch. Next week, The Gladiators march to Conyers to face the Heritage Patriots.

The 3-2 Cedar Shoals Jaguars hope to avoid a stampede tonight as they face the 4-1 Gainesville Red Elephants. The Jags spent this past week preparing to take on the GHSA-statewide ranked #13 Elephants, whose only defeat this season was a two-point squeaker against #6 West Forsyth. Last Friday the Jaguars were nearly upset by the late game rally of the Loganville Red Devils, but held on to win 28-26 in the Fourth quarter. Next week they are on bye week before hosting the Apalachee Wildcats on Oct. 19.

Athens Christian Academy Eagles are home tonight against the Commerce Tigers. The Eagles were shutout last week by the North Oconee Titans, 0-44 and find themselves 1-5 at mid-season. The Tigers, meanwhile, are eager to claw their way back into the top ten. Last week, they tasted defeat for the first time and were knocked out of the AP Press Poll's 8-A top ten courtesy of the George Walton Academy Bulldogs.  Next week, the Eagles will face Hebron Christian.

The Oconee County Warriors have faced some tough competition this season, as reflected by their 1-3 record, including two teams at the tops of their regions and one in the hunt. Last week, they were delivered a 14-56 defeat by the 4-0 Morgan County Bulldogs. Tonight they welcome the 2-2 Elbert County Blue Devils, who crushed East Jackson last week, 42-2. Next week they head north to face Hart County High.

North Oconee is set to take on those 4-0 Morgan Co. Bulldogs at the NOHS homecoming game tonight. The Titans lost their season opener to St Pius X by a whopping 14-50, but since that game their season has taken on an impressive tone. Last week, they crushed the Jackson County Panthers 35-6. The six points put up by the Panthers represent the only scoring Titan opponents have done since the St Pius game. Next week, the Titans face the  Franklin County Lions at home.

The Winder-Barrow Bulldoggs have their work cut out for them tonight against the Heritage Patriots. The Doggs head into mid-season with a frustrating 0-4 record. Last week they took a bye to regroup on the heels of a close game against Salem on Sept 21 which they lost on the road 20-22. Heritage is 4-1, with their only loss coming last week to the GHSA #13 ranked Gainseville Red Elephants, who continued their stampede across the state by defeating the Patriots 42-14. Next week will see no reprieve for the Doggs as they will head to Flowery Branch to face the GHSA #38 Falcons.

Those Falcons aren't far away tonight. In fact, they are just across 316 in Apalachee Wildcat territory. The Cats haven't logged a win since their season opener against Lanier, and fell last week to Clarke Central, 12-35. A win tonight would be quite an upset against the 3-2 Flowery Branch team. Don't let those 2 losses fool you...one came against GHSA ranked #3 Northside (Warner Robbins); in the other they came within a touchdown against #6 Gainesville. The three other teams they have defeated by an average of three touchdowns. Next week the Cats head a few miles south on Hwy 81 to meet the Loganville Red Devils.

The Knights of Bethlehem Christian Academy seek win #2 for the season against a hapless Hanckock Academy team. BCA is 1-5 on the season following last week's 17-20 loss to David Emmanuel Academy. Hancock is 0-6 on the season after losing to Green Academy 31-41 last week. Next week the Knights face Curtis Baptist School.
