MPD Continue Investigation into Saturday's Fatal Shooting in Monroe

Ray Murphy was fatally shot outside a home on Reed Street in Monroe on Saturday night.

As detectives from the Monroe Police Department investigate a shooting that happened in the city on Saturday night, family members of the victim are tasked with planning a funeral.

Ray Murphy was shot twice outside a home on Reed Street in Monroe on Saturday night, according to MPD Asst. Chief RV Watts. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Murphy laying in the ditch, bleeding from his wounds.

"It happened at about 10:30 p.m.," Watts said. "My officers arrived first and then EMS arrived and transported him to the hospital."

Watts said surgery was performed on Murphy as efforts were made to save him, but he did not survive. Watts said Murphy passed away at about 4 a.m. Sunday morning.

Watts said the shooting is still under investigation as police continue to interview witnesses.

Word quickly spread about the shooting on Sunday morning and memorial messages began pouring in on Murphy's Facebook page. Many of the R.I.P. messages were from fellow students who had attended Monroe Area High School with Murphy in the 1990s.

Detail on funeral arrangements for Murphy will be posted on Monroe Patch as soon as they are made available.
