Early Morning Fire at Captain D's in Monroe Destroys Building

Reason for the fire is currently under investigation.

An early morning fire at Captain D's in Monroe Sunday left little of the building standing, Monroe Fire Department officials said. Nobody was in the building at the time of the fire. The restaurant had already closed up for the night.

MFD public information officer Lt. William Owens said local and state fire investigators were sifting through the remains of the building Sunday morning. He said initial calls came in around 1:20 a.m. and first arriving crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure.

"We could see the smoke and flame from 1/2 mile away" said Captain Jack Armstrong. "Fire crews were quickly forced to fight the fire from outside the structure."

Officials said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Fire investigators will be working throughout the morning to determine the cause of the blaze. Owens said nobody was injured during the fire.
