Sheriff: Legislation Will Help Criminals Who 'Poison Our Loved Ones With Illicit Drugs' - Barrow Patch

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith has asked citizens to contact legislators regarding a bill he says would negatively impact law enforcement efforts to curtail the drug trade.

"One of the most valuable tools we have in law enforcement that really does affect the illicit drug dealers and other criminals who reap the rewards of tax free profits has been our search and seizure laws," Smith said.

"This year in the legislature there is an effort in your General Assembly that will make it much more difficult for law enforcement across the state to seize and condemn the money and proceeds of criminals," he added. "It is known as HOUSE BILL 1 and it is 92 pages long. This bill attacks our current search and seizure laws which have been upheld in appellate courts. This bill will do nothing but help those criminals who profit from poisoning our loved ones with illicit drugs."

Sugarloaf Mills security contacted the Gwinnett County Police Department (GCPD) after an employee of Bass Pro reported that another employee of the store had identified himself as a police officer. A GCPD officer located the man, later identified as Zachariah Henry, 27, of Buford, wearing a baseball cap with "POLICE" across the front. Henry was also wearing a holstered Glock 22, handcuffs, two loaded magazines and a gold-plated badge which appeared to be similar to a Gwinnett County Police badge.
