November is Parent Engagement in Education Month

Gov. Nathan Deal signed a proclamation designating November 2012 as Parent Engagement Month in Education in Georgia.

While a good teacher is an important factor in a child’s education, so is the family’s participation. In an effort to boost family involvement in a student’s education, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed a proclamation last month designating November 2012 as Parent Engagement Month in Education in Georgia.

Walton County Public Schools is using Family Engagement Month to bring awareness the role parents play in their children’s education. In a release on the WCPS website, it is noted that students whose parents provide a strong support system and are engaged in their education perform better in school. Engaged parents, therefore, can have a profound effect on the education and thereby overall well-being of a child.

Family engagement is defined as:

  • Volunteering time – it is rewarding for children, teachers and administrators when parents volunteer in the school.
  • Observing in the classroom – monitor what student is learning, doing so will show you care. Support your child’s teacher, help bridge the gap between school and home.
  • Support your child – review homework, help set goals, read together, stay up to date with current events and provide enriching learning opportunities.
  • Be active in a parent organization – such as a Parent Teacher (Student) Organization (PTO/PTSO), Parent Advisory and School Council, Booster, etc.
  • Attend school events – such as curriculum nights, award ceremonies, workshop and teacher conferences, award ceremonies or simply dropping by to have lunch with your child.
  • Communicate with school staff – stay in contact with your child’s teacher, counselor and administrators.
  • Be there for your child – relate to your child, hand up you cell phone, make eye contact and talk to your child. Tell them you love them.
